Title
2.33 C Cultural Plunge
Subject(s)
Culture
Description
The Cultural Plunge Program seeks to expand each student’s cultural awareness and understanding as well as heighten self-awareness through exposure to social issues and identities different than their own.
A cultural plunge is an individual exposure to persons or groups of a different social identity from that of the “plunger”. Social identities may include but are not limited to race, ethnicity, national origin, language, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, gender identity, ability, religion, age, or political affiliation.
Taking on the Plunge
At CNU, there are plunge opportunities with varied levels of challenge and risk. We welcome students to start this process by trying something new. We recognize that trying something new:
Requires a degree of willingness and courage
Opens up the possibility for students to enjoy something new—things, hobby, food, people, etc.
Encourages personal growth and development
As students work their way through each tier of their cultural plunge experience, we believe students will gain a greater level of confidence and personal growth, leading to a greater willingness to continue exploring the challenge and risk associated with being in new and different experiences. Students’ comfort level and confidence may be challenged. However, we recognize the importance of processing possible discomfort in a way which can shape positive meaning and purpose which leads to an increased level of comfort and confidence in future experiences. If attempting a cultural plunge on your own is at first too high risk, students are encouraged to invite friends to participate in the plunge experiences as well.
Reporting & Tracking Plunges
You will be able to report your plunge experiences through the self-reporting tool under “Experiences” in the Compass. Students will become eligible for incentives and recognition through participating in the program.
Students must report completion of the activity within the same semester which it was completed
Students may count required activities and events from an academic course or another program (such as PLP or a Greek-lettered organization) toward the Cultural Plunge Program
There is no limit to the number of cultural plunges you may submit
Students should complete the plunges in a linear progression beginning with the first tier and ending with completion of the third tier
Students cannot “double dip” and complete a similar activity to satisfy the same requirement for each tier. All submissions are reviewed and approved by the Assistant Director for Diversity Initiatives.
