Description
ou (sic) are invited to join us Wednesday, March 20th, at 6:30PM in the Studio Theatre of the Ferguson Center at Christopher Newport University (CNU) for the film screening of "Prayers For Bobby," sponsored by the inaugural Queer Film Festival of Hampton Roads (reelitout.org).
"Prayers For Bobby" is the true depicted story of Bobby Griffith, a teenage boy raised in a traditional Christian household in the late 70s/early 80s. When Bobby came out as gay, his mother Mary Griffith (played by Sigourney Weaver) tried to change his sexuality through teachings of prayer and sin from the Bible. But Bobby could not change. Eventually, Mary disowned Bobby as her son, and Bobby left his home in California to live in Seattle. Torn between his faith and sexuality, and burdened by the despair of his situation, Bobby committed suicide on August 27th, 1983. What follows is the tragic and heart-wrenching story of a mother coming to terms with the suicide of her homosexual son, who she had loved, despite his "flaw." Mary emerges a transformed woman. For more information, check out http://www.prayersforbobby.com/.
The film starts at 6:30PM. A panel discussion will follow that examines the relationship between religion and sexuality, as well as how this relationship is communicated via popular film. Panelists include Dr. Abbe Depretis of the Communication Department, Dr. John Nichols of Film Studies, and Dr. Kip Redick of the Philosophy and Religious Studies Department of CNU. Submit questions at the event in person, via notecard, or by tweeting #reelitout.
Admission is free, but ticketed. Tickets can be ordered at http://reelitout.org/index.php/tickets-passes/buy-tickets. Scroll to the botton of the screen, enter your information, select "Prayers For Bobby," and hit "Submit." A ticket receipt will be sent to you via email for download and print-offs. Bring this with you to the event, along with a Picture ID, for registration. Tickets will also be available at the event. Catering will also be provided, at no cost.
A $5 donation is welcomed and encouraged. All proceeds will go to the ACCESS AIDS Care Center for Education and Support Services of Hampton Roads (accessaids.org). Donations will be directed toward the following purposes:
1. To provide educational and supportive services to LGBT individuals and LGBT youth.
2. To help those directly and indirectly affected by HIV/AIDS.
3. To generate the beginnings of an annual Film Festival tradition.
This event is brought to you by the Gay-Straight Student Union (GSSU), Communication Club, Film Club, United Campus Ministries (UCM), Fellowship of Christian Unitarian Universalist Students (FOCUUS), and Tau Delta Phi Fraternity of CNU! It's an event you won't want to miss.
