These are challenging and difficult economic times. After consultation with Provost Padilla and Vice President O’Connell, starting today academic advising, career development and international programs will report to the Vice President for Student Services. Advising and career development will be combined and will report through the Registrar Lisa Duncan-Raines to Vice President O’Connell. All three of these departments are already co-located in the David Student Union and will benefit from shared administrative support.
The Dean of Students Dr. Kevin Hughes will now be responsible for overseeing all student disability requests and accommodations will be channeled through the faculty, dining, housing, counseling and other areas of the university. The Dean of Students Office will maintain the students’ confidential records.
I wish to thank Dr. Kelly Cartwright for her energetic and important service over the last two years as Associate Provost. Provost Padilla is especially grateful for Dr. Cartwright’s advice, assistance and support during his initial years. Kelly’s tenure as Associate Provost will conclude this summer and she will return in the fall term to the Department of Psychology where her instructional expertise and ongoing research productivity remains critically important. I am pleased that Dr. Cartwright will continue her excellent work as Director of Graduate Studies and will report directly to the Provost.
On July 1, 2009, the three academic deans – Prof. Breese, Dr. Cleeton and Dr. Doughty – will begin overseeing their respective colleges. Associate Dean for Liberal Learning, Dr. Bartels, will report to the Provost, with duties to be redefined over the summer as the Associate Dean for University Programs. Assistant to the Deans, Lorraine Hall, reports through the Deans to Vice Provost Schwarze and will continue with established responsibilities.
In August, we will welcome the largest and best qualified freshman class in the history of Christopher Newport University and many new faculty on the tenure track. By taking continuous and very carefully designed steps to match programs with resources and enhance services, our future shines bright. Thanks for your many contributions to the success of CNU and our students.
