On September 26, Film #1, Potiche, a light comedy starring Catherine DENEUVE, Gérard DEPARDIEU

Based on a French play, Potiche (or "Trophy Wife") is set in 1977. Suzanne Pujol (Catherine Deneuve), a 'trophy housewife', finds out she must step up to manage her tyrannical husband Robert's (Fabrice Luchini) umbrella factory after the workers go on strike and take him hostage. To everyone's surprise, Suzanne proves herself to be a very competent leader of action. Her adult son and daughter also start to take more interest in the workings of the factory. Things get complex, however, when she bumps into her old flame and local politician, Maurice Babin (Gérard Depardieu), and her husband returns to take back his job. A colorful, energetic satire with plenty of twists and surprises, Potiche is directed by François Ozon, one of the top young directors today--best known in the US for Eight Women (2002).

On October 3, Film #2, international spy thriller Farewell, starring Willem DEFOE, Guillaume CANET, Diane KRUGER

In 1985, Sergei Gregoriev, a Soviet colonel, wants to force his nation to reform, so he leaks secret information to the West. He picks an unlikely contact, a Pierre Froment, from the French diplomatic corps. Gregoriev keeps a lot of balls in the air - a marriage, a teen son he's trying to bond with, a mistress who's a colleague at work; his tradecraft is equally reckless. Meanwhile, Froment keeps his spy work secret from his Russian wife, and Mitterrand uses Gregoriev's information to make France indispensable to Reagan and his government. When Gregoriev leaks a list of key Soviet moles and spies, Gorbachev is left without secret intelligence. Will Gregoriev get what he wants?

On October 10, Film #3, Two in the Wave, a documentary on famous French New Wave filmmakers TRUFFAUT & GODARD

Two in the Wave is the story of the friendship between two of the most important figures of French film history--a friendship that would truly change world cinema forever. Jean-Luc Godard was born in 1930; Francois Truffaut two years later. When the younger of the two becomes a filmmaker with The 400 Blows, which triumphs in Cannes in 1959, he helps his older friend shift to directing, offering him a screenplay which already has a title, A bout de souffle, or Breathless. Acclaimed the world over as iconic filmmakers and symbols of the new rebellious generation of the 60s, Truffaut and Godard continue to be of enormous importance, and the story of their rocky friendship--with its ups and deep downs--is emblematic of French cinema as a whole.

On October 19, FIlm #4, Terror's Advocate -- Come meet the man who has served as legal defense for dictators, war criminals and terrorists!

This is a documentary on Jacques Vergès, the former Free French Forces guerrilla who worked as defense lawyer for such hated figures as Nazi war criminal Klaus Barbie and Carlos the Jackal. Directed by Barbet Schroeder, Terror's Advocate is a revealing portrait of this outspoken and controversial French lawyer, and raises compelling, fundamental questions about modern societies and the rule of law. Does everyone--even the most heinous of criminals--truly have the right to robust legal defense, regardless of the nature of their crimes? Stick around for discussion!

On October 24, our finale, Of Gods and Men, last year's French contender at the Academy Awards, and Grand Prize Winner at the Cannes Film Festival!

This film tells the story of a small group of French monks in a monastery in Algeria. They are clearly different in a cultural sense from the surrounding community; however, their simple life and acts of charity are welcomed and accepted by the Muslims in the adjacent village. The plot revolves around the grave threat from militants in the region. The Algerian revolution has succeeded in forcing out the French colonial forces and the Algerian government and army officials want the monks to return to France for reasons of safety. The monastery is seen as a remnant of colonialism, and is therefore the target of nationalistic and religious violence. Should the monks stay? What will happen if they do? This film is a moving look at the themes of religious belief, faith and service in a climate of danger and political strife.

Hi Mary:

I just wanted you to know that 240 Trible Library will serve two functions this year: Center for Academic Success and Center for Student Success. I am responsible for the CAS and Nicole Guajardo is responsible for the Center for Student Success. There will be three offices in the physical space: Brian Bradie will have the office at the back of the space and two additional offices will be constructed in the main space for student success. The reporting structure will be interesting to work out. Brian will be responsible for the tutoring part of CAS and for all parts of CSS. Mary Wright will be responsible for the writing center part of CAS.

Thanks,

Bobbye

<text>Dear CNU Faculty--Greeting from the Faculty Senate. I hope that you are having a restful and productive summer so far. I have just received the complete and final five-year Faculty Senate Review report (that is, report + appendices), so I wanted to send it out to everyone. Many thanks to the committee (Pete Carlson, Kathleen Brunke, Bill Connell, Stephanie Bardwell, Ed Weiss, Mary Wright) that produced the report and to Deb Moore and Joann Morgan from University Assessment and Evaluation who provided the appendices and produced the final document.

I also wanted to let people know that the Faculty Senate website (http://www.cnu.edu/facsen/index.asp) is now updated (almost completely), including archives of agendas and minutes back to 1999-2000 as well as the membership of the 2011-12 senate. Many thanks to Bill Brauer, Bruce Bronstein, and Maggie Vaughn for their help and expertise with the website.</text>
