<text>CNU’s legendary Basketball Coach, C.J. Woollum, has decided to retire as Head Basketball Coach after 26 seasons on the bench and 502 wins.

C.J.’s love and knowledge of the game of basketball, his dedication to the success of his student-athletes, on and off the court, and his passion for CNU have built one of America’s most respected athletic programs. Coach Woollum has left an indelible mark on this university, this community and the countless student-athletes he taught to work hard, play as a team and pursue excellence in all things.

Happily for all of us, our dear friend and valued colleague will continue to serve as CNU’s Director of Athletics and contribute mightily to the success of our University.

C.J., thanks for all the wonderful victories and moments we shared in Ratcliffe Gym and the Freeman Center. Most of all, we are truly grateful for the example you provided all of us of how one leads a good and successful life by investing time and talent unselfishly in others.

I want to share with you Coach Woollum’s gracious letter to me announcing his retirement.

April 20, 2010

Dear Senator Trible:

I am writing to inform you of my retirement as Head Basketball Coach at Christopher Newport University, effective on the date that a new coach begins.

It has been an honor to lead this program and my hope, and belief, is that the new coach will build on our tradition and take the program to loftier heights.

Please know how much I have appreciated your support and how much I cherish our friendship. With your approval, I would like to continue as your Director of Athletics for a few more years, as we still have much to accomplish.

When I arrived here in 1984, we were pretty unknown, indeed, a local commuter college with not much to sell. As evidenced by the reaction when I received the 500 award at the Final Four, CNU is officially a University whose reputation reaches far beyond our borders. We can all be proud and you can stand tall in accomplishing a transformation that is unheard of in all of higher education.

Sincerely,
C.J. Woollum

<text>These are challenging and difficult economic times. After consultation with Provost Padilla and Vice President O’Connell, starting today academic advising, career development and international programs will report to the Vice President for Student Services. Advising and career development will be combined and will report through the Registrar Lisa Duncan-Raines to Vice President O’Connell. All three of these departments are already co-located in the David Student Union and will benefit from shared administrative support.

The Dean of Students Dr. Kevin Hughes will now be responsible for overseeing all student disability requests and accommodations will be channeled through the faculty, dining, housing, counseling and other areas of the university. The Dean of Students Office will maintain the students’ confidential records.

I wish to thank Dr. Kelly Cartwright for her energetic and important service over the last two years as Associate Provost. Provost Padilla is especially grateful for Dr. Cartwright’s advice, assistance and support during his initial years. Kelly’s tenure as Associate Provost will conclude this summer and she will return in the fall term to the Department of Psychology where her instructional expertise and ongoing research productivity remains critically important. I am pleased that Dr. Cartwright will continue her excellent work as Director of Graduate Studies and will report directly to the Provost.

On July 1, 2009, the three academic deans – Prof. Breese, Dr. Cleeton and Dr. Doughty – will begin overseeing their respective colleges. Associate Dean for Liberal Learning, Dr. Bartels, will report to the Provost, with duties to be redefined over the summer as the Associate Dean for University Programs. Assistant to the Deans, Lorraine Hall, reports through the Deans to Vice Provost Schwarze and will continue with established responsibilities.

In August, we will welcome the largest and best qualified freshman class in the history of Christopher Newport University and many new faculty on the tenure track. By taking continuous and very carefully designed steps to match programs with resources and enhance services, our future shines bright. Thanks for your many contributions to the success of CNU and our students.</text>

Ms. Thompson joins us from Birmingham-Southern College where she has served as the Vice President for Institutional Advancement since 2005. She successfully led and completed the first phase of Birmingham-Southern’s comprehensive campaign, surpassing the $50 million goal last August. She also served as Vice President for Development at the CDC Foundation in Atlanta, securing over $45 million in support of that national foundation’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and served for nine years as Assistant Vice President for Development at Agnes Scott College.

Ms. Thompson is a Phi Beta Kappa, Cum Laude graduate of Birmingham-Southern College with a bachelor’s degree in English. She is deeply committed to liberal learning having spent more than half of her 25-year career in non-profit leadership at excellent liberal arts and sciences schools. In addition to her many other talents, she is
an accomplished vocalist and has performed at Atlanta’s Lyric Theater.
