Bill Bolling was elected to a second four-year term as Lieutenant Governor in November 2009 and won 57% of the popular vote. Prior to his election as Lieutenant Governor, Mr. Bolling served for ten years in the Virginia Senate where he was widely recognized for his work on health care and natural resources issues. Governor McDonnell has selected Mr. Bolling to serve as Virginia’s Chief Jobs Creation Officer and he is responsible for coordinating our state’s economic development programs and working with business leaders to identify ways to improve our state’s economy. Woollum, has decided to retire as Head Basketball Coach after 26 seasons on the bench and 502 wins. C.J.’s love and knowledge of the game of basketball, his dedication to the success of his student-athletes, on and off the court, and his passion for CNU have built one of America’s most respected athletic programs. Coach Woollum has left an indelible mark on this university, this community and the countless student-athletes he taught to work hard, play as a team and pursue excellence in all things. Steven Breese's expertise is in the creative arts, specifically directing and acting, while David Doughty's scholarly expertise is in nuclear physics. They have distinguished themselves as Chairs of academic departments and both have an extensive record of participation in faculty governance and other University service. In December 1973 the Collegiate Civitan Club of Christopher Newport College created a time capsule “to be opened December 2010.” It was buried under the floor of the old Student Center between Discovery Cafe and the entrance to Library Services and was marked by a bronze plaque. Before the Student Center was demolished in 2007, the capsule was carefully removed and placed in a vault for safe keeping until now. Doerries, Professor Emeritus of Psychology, served for over 30 years in the department, where he helped to shape the core curriculm in psychology. In particular, his expertise in experimental psychology contributed to the experimental foundations of the department. Dr. Doerries had a passion for mentoring students in research and leaves a legacy of students for whom he made a significant difference in their lives. -------------------------------- Lee E. DOERRIES NEWPORT NEWS - Lee E. Doerries, Ph.D., 66, died March 4, 2011, after a long struggle with complications from diabetes. During his 36 years of dedicated service as a professor of Experimental Psychology at Christopher Newport University (CNU), he taught and mentored thousands of students and co-authored more than 50 papers and research presentations, many of which were based on his collaboration with colleagues at Eastern Virginia Medical School regarding the neurological basis of anorexia nervosa. Dr. Doerries was awarded emeritus status when he retired from CNU in 2007. Lee Doerries served as the chairman of the Department of Psychology at CNU from 1977-82. Over his tenure, he offered his professional services to CNU and to the Hampton Roads community, as a board member for United Campus Ministries, Alternatives Incorporated, and Planned Parenthood. Lee was also a member of Hidenwood Presbyterian's Stephen Ministry. He worked to advance the quality of science and mathematics education in both gifted and minority youth as a consultant for programs like Head Start, Project Excel, V-Quest, GearUp, and as a mentor to students in the New Horizons Governor's School program. In addition to his professional activities, Lee formed and sustained many important and lasting friendships with his students and colleagues that extended well beyond the classroom. He is survived by his wife, Denyse; their two sons, Mark and wife, Hillary, Bryan and wife, Sarah; and granddaughter, Abigail; and his sister-in-law, Patricia Brennan; and brother-in-law, Bob Green. The family would like to thank Ruth and Mike Chamowitz for demonstrating the true meaning of friendship; Nelson and Virginia Smith for their enduring loyalty; Dr. John Brady, "The Village Doctor," for his supreme integrity and compassion; Dr. Edward Krauss at Johns Hopkins Hospital for his profound humanity; and all of the friends and medical providers who were present for Lee during the last months of his life. Ms. Thompson joins us from Birmingham-Southern College where she has served as the Vice President for Institutional Advancement since 2005. She successfully led and completed the first phase of Birmingham-Southern’s comprehensive campaign, surpassing the $50 million goal last August. She also served as Vice President for Development at the CDC Foundation in Atlanta, securing over $45 million in support of that national foundation’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and served for nine years as Assistant Vice President for Development at Agnes Scott College. Ms. Thompson is a Phi Beta Kappa, Cum Laude graduate of Birmingham-Southern College with a bachelor’s degree in English. She is deeply committed to liberal learning having spent more than half of her 25-year career in non-profit leadership at excellent liberal arts and sciences schools.
