<text>I thought you may want a bit more information on E.J. "King" Meehan for your future discussions with the President regarding his plaque. Meehan was a Peninsula businessman who was one of the key figures in Christopher Newport College's founding. Working in conjunction with other businessmen and civic leaders, he helped convince government authorities in the late 1950s of the need for a local college for Peninsula residents. He was also a lead figure in advocating for CNC's transition to four-year status in the late 1960s. Along with CCing Amy Boykin, I have also included Rita Hubbard in case she wants to add anything. In short, Meehan is someone who should indeed be remembered on our campus. Thanks,</text>

<text>These are challenging and difficult economic times. After consultation with Provost Padilla and Vice President O’Connell, starting today academic advising, career development and international programs will report to the Vice President for Student Services. Advising and career development will be combined and will report through the Registrar Lisa Duncan-Raines to Vice President O’Connell. All three of these departments are already co-located in the David Student Union and will benefit from shared administrative support.

The Dean of Students Dr. Kevin Hughes will now be responsible for overseeing all student disability requests and accommodations will be channeled through the faculty, dining, housing, counseling and other areas of the university. The Dean of Students Office will maintain the students’ confidential records.

I wish to thank Dr. Kelly Cartwright for her energetic and important service over the last two years as Associate Provost. Provost Padilla is especially grateful for Dr. Cartwright’s advice, assistance and support during his initial years. Kelly’s tenure as Associate Provost will conclude this summer and she will return in the fall term to the Department of Psychology where her instructional expertise and ongoing research productivity remains critically important. I am pleased that Dr. Cartwright will continue her excellent work as Director of Graduate Studies and will report directly to the Provost.

On July 1, 2009, the three academic deans – Prof. Breese, Dr. Cleeton and Dr. Doughty – will begin overseeing their respective colleges. Associate Dean for Liberal Learning, Dr. Bartels, will report to the Provost, with duties to be redefined over the summer as the Associate Dean for University Programs. Assistant to the Deans, Lorraine Hall, reports through the Deans to Vice Provost Schwarze and will continue with established responsibilities.

In August, we will welcome the largest and best qualified freshman class in the history of Christopher Newport University and many new faculty on the tenure track. By taking continuous and very carefully designed steps to match programs with resources and enhance services, our future shines bright. Thanks for your many contributions to the success of CNU and our students.</text>

Classes begin on Monday, January 11, and the spectacular new Lewis Archer McMurran, Jr. Hall will be ready for classes. It is an extraordinary 21st Century teaching and learning facility and will empower all of our liberal arts disciplines and contribute mightily to the success of our students and faculty.

On Monday evening at 5:30 p.m. we will have a brief ceremony on the plaza in front of McMurran Hall, which will include a ribbon cutting and fireworks, followed by tours and refreshments. I hope you will join us on this festive occasion as we gather the CNU community to celebrate another historic landmark on our campus.</text>

              <text>Dear CNU Community,

Thank you all for your concern about the fire at the library last Wednesday. The fire was on the roof above the reading room of the Mariners' Library. The fire department and our security were able to move everything out of the way so no furniture nor materials were damaged. The reading room did sustain some water damage, but restoration work began 2 hours after the fire was put out. The collection is now open by appointment only until the reading room is restored.

CNU administration, plant and security – both CNU and Mariners’ - were incredibly responsive. I personally am grateful for all they did. </text>
