<text>Interim Deans Steven Breese and David Doughty have ably led, respectively, the College of Arts & Humanities and the College of Natural and Behavioral Sciences since July 1, 2009. Upon consultation with Provost Mark Padilla, I have decided that their record of achievement warrants appointment without the Interim designation, and I am pleased they have accepted my offer to serve in this new capacity.

Steven Breese's expertise is in the creative arts, specifically directing and acting, while David Doughty's scholarly expertise is in nuclear physics. They have distinguished themselves as Chairs of academic departments and both have an extensive record of participation in faculty governance and other University service. The Provost and I regularly count on Steven and David to lead initiatives and solve problems.

With these appointments, CNU now has top-notch administration in all three Colleges, as they join Robert Colvin who was appointed Dean of the College of Social Sciences in May. Please congratulate Steven and David and support them as they continue the important but difficult process of engaging faculty, staff and students to advance our mission of liberal arts excellence.</text>

              <text>Colleagues--

I am pleased to share with you that Dr. Laura Deiulio has agreed to serve as Vice Provost effective January 3, 2011. Laura holds the rank of associate professor in the Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures, where she specializes in German. She is currently the Chair of MCLL, and Dean Breese will soon appoint a successor. Laura served as co-chair of the Liberal Learning Council in AY 04-05 and Chair of the UCC in AY 05-06. I am grateful for her willingness to take up the important role of Vice Provost.

I am studying the duties of and needs for the Vice Provost and Associate Provost offices and will set some new reporting and oversight duties in the next few months. I expect that the Vice Provost will continue to provide the faculty with an important administrative resource.

I remain sincerely grateful to Ronnie Cohen for her continuing, gracious, and invaluable help this fall term as Interim Vice Provost, an office in which she stepped for the semester only to aid the University during a time of administrative transition. </text>
