Edith Melton

     Edith Melton was born January 23, 1931 in rural Oak Willow, North Carolina.  After graduating from segregated  C.S. Brown High School in Winton, NC, Mrs. Melton moved to Norfolk, VA, where she married her high school sweetheart, Mr. G.I. Melton.  After he completed military service in Norfolk, the couple moved to Philadelphia where they lived briefly before retunring to the Hampton Roads area to settle and raise their four children. 

  Mr. Melton became the pastor of New Hope Baptist Church in Hampton, VA in 1970.  Mrs. Melton served as the First Lady of the church until her husband's death in 1981.  At present, she coordinates various service activities at her church such as angel trees, senior citizen activities, teaching children, and attending to sick members of the church.  She is also author of the book, God Answers Prayer.
